WaveCom is a CISPE Member
WaveCom has joined CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe), an organization that brings together European cloud infrastructure service providers. The organization promotes a secure, legally compliant, and sustainable cloud ecosystem, supporting European data sovereignty and values.
CISPE’s role in shaping the European cloud market includes, among other things:
- The practical implementation of European Union data protection and data sovereignty principles in cloud services
- Participation in the development of requirements and standards for the EU Sovereign Cloud
- Independent conformity assessment and certification of service providers
- Promoting transparency and fair competition in the European cloud market
- Encouraging the use of European-based technologies and open standards
- Preventing vendor lock-in (dependency on a single service provider), so-called kill switches, and practices and IT solutions that conflict with the legal framework
WaveCom CTO Kristian Liivak participates in a CISPE committee responsible for developing European Union sovereign cloud requirements, which will in the future form the basis for public sector—and hopefully also private sector—procurement requirements.
In Europe, strong and competitive alternatives to global cloud services such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure are emerging, which will not qualify as EU sovereign cloud services in the future. Service providers are also excluded if they:
- Use non-EU software and technology platforms whose licensing and pricing terms change continuously and maliciously, creating strong vendor lock-in
- Are not owned or governed within the EU and do not comply with the European Union’s legal framework and data protection practices
Within the European Union, new cloud-ready virtualization and infrastructure solutions are being actively developed, such as the Vates Virtualization Management Stack (XCP-ng / Xen Orchestra), on which WaveCom is building its new cloud service. In addition, there are several other strong European-based alternatives available.
The Future of the European Cloud
As CISPE itself states, it is time to put an end to the “cowboys” who operate by their own rules and do not respect European legislation and data protection. The big cloud trio may already be riding into the sunset in Europe, because CISPE is the new sheriff in town—protecting a fair, transparent, and sovereign European cloud space where data truly belongs to its owners.
WaveCom is also preparing for independent CISPE certification in the near future, which will provide customers with additional assurance that WaveCom’s services comply with European Union data protection requirements, the legal framework, and the principles of data sovereignty and control.
